Photon wave mechanics and position eigenvectors
One and two photon wave functions are derived by projecting the quantum state
vector onto simultaneous eigenvectors of the number operator and a recently
constructed photon position operator [Phys. Rev A 59, 954 (1999)] that couples
spin and orbital angular momentum. While only the Landau-Peierls wave function
defines a positive definite photon density, a similarity transformation to a
biorthogonal field-potential pair of positive frequency solutions of Maxwell's
equations preserves eigenvalues and expectation values. We show that this real
space description of photons is compatible with all of the usual rules of
quantum mechanics and provides a framework for understanding the relationships
amongst different forms of the photon wave function in the literature. It also
gives a quantum picture of the optical angular momentum of beams that applies
to both one photon and coherent states. According to the rules of qunatum
mechanics, this wave function gives the probability to count a photon at any

Life events and hemodynamic stress reactivity in the middle-aged and elderly
Recent versions of the reactivity hypothesis, which consider it to be the product of stress exposure and exaggerated haemodynamic reactions to stress that confers cardiovascular disease risk, assume that reactivity is independent of the experience of stressful life events. This assumption was tested in two substantial cohorts, one middle-aged and one elderly. Participants had to indicate from a list of major stressful life events up to six they had experienced in the previous two years. They were also asked to rate how disruptive and stressful they were, at the time of occurrence and now. Blood pressure and pulse rate were measured at rest and in response to acute mental stress. Those who rated the events as highly disruptive at the time of exposure and currently exhibited blunted systolic blood pressure reactions to acute stress. The present results suggest that acute stress reactivity may not be independent of stressful life events experience
Strontium concentration, radiogenic (<sup>87</sup>Sr/86Sr) and stable (<i>δ</i><sup>88</sup>Sr) strontium isotope systematics in a controlled feeding study.
Transhumance and palaeodiet are two central themes in archaeology and using chemical analysis of bones and teeth to reconstruct trends and patterns in diet and mobility has become a cornerstone of bioarchaeology. This study has investigated strontium concentration ([Sr]), radiogenic (87Sr/86Sr) and stable strontium (δ88Sr) isotope systematics in a controlled feeding experiment on domestic pigs designed to simulate terrestrial versus marine protein consumption. The results of the radiogenic (87Sr/86Sr) analysis offer a validation of the strontium isotope methodology. The study confirms that the radiogenic strontium isotope composition of dental enamel does represent the radiogenic strontium isotope composition of the diet. The results of the δ88Sr analysis have revealed a distinct shift of 0.322 ± 0.060 ‰ towards isotopically light Sr with trophic level. The magnitude of this shift is consistent with the predictions from the analogous shift observed in calcium isotopes. This is the first time that trophic level fractionation in δ88Sr has been identified in a controlled setting. Although still in its infancy, δ88Sr analysis has great potential to inform on trophic level systematics, to investigate dietary trends in early life and is potentially useful in examining diagenetic alteration

Fundamental stellar parameters of zeta Pup and gamma^2 Vel from HIPPARCOS data
We report parallax measurements by the HIPPARCOS satellite of zeta Puppis and
gamma^2 Velorum. The distance of zeta Pup is d=429 (+120/ -77) pc, in agreement
with the commonly adopted value to Vela OB2. However, a significantly smaller
distance is found for the gamma^2 Vel system: d=258 (+41/-31) pc. The total
mass of gamma^2 Vel derived from its parallax, the angular size of the
semi-major axis as measured with intensity interferometry, and the period is
M(WR+O)=29.5 (+/-15.9) Msun. This result favors the orbital solution of Pike et
al. (1983) over that of Moffat et al. (1986). The stellar parameters for the O
star companion derived from line blanketed non-LTE atmosphere models are:
Teff=34000 (+/-1500) K, log L/Lsun=5.3 (+/-0.15) from which an evolutionary
mass of M=29 (+/-4) Msun and an age of 4.0 (+0.8/-0.5) Myr is obtained from
single star evolutionary models. With non-LTE model calculations including He
and C we derive a luminosity log L/Lsun~4.7 (+/-0.2) for the WR star. The
mass-luminosity relation of hydrogen-free WR stars implies a mass of M(WR)~5
(+/-1.5) Msun. From our data we favor an age of ~10 Myr for the bulk of the
Vela OB2 stars. Evolutionary scenarios for zeta Pup and gamma^2 Vel are

A case-control study of cryptorchidism and maternal hormone concentrations in early pregnancy.
Serum samples taken between 6 and 20 weeks of gestation were obtained from 28 mothers who gave birth to cryptorchid sons (cases) and from 108 control mothers. In comparison with controls the cases had 10% higher geometric mean oestradiol (95% CI -13% to +39%: P=0.42) and 10% lower geometric mean testosterone (95% CI -27% to +10%: P=0.30). Among the samples collected between 6 and 14 weeks of gestation geometric mean concentrations of oestradiol and testosterone were 5% lower (95% CI -32% to +31%: P=0.74) and 25% lower (95% CI -45% to +1%: P=0.06) respectively in cases than in controls. Among the samples collected between 15 and 20 weeks of gestation geometric mean concentrations of oestradiol and testosterone were 29% higher (95% CI -8% to +79%: P=0.14) and 21% higher (95% CI -8% to +60%: P=0.18) respectively in cases than in controls. The results do not support the hypothesis that cryptorchidism may be caused by high concentrations of oestradiol in the maternal blood during the first phase of testicular descent, but suggest that the possible association of cryptorchidism with low maternal testosterone during early gestation should be further investigated
Theory of continuum percolation I. General formalism
The theoretical basis of continuum percolation has changed greatly since its
beginning as little more than an analogy with lattice systems. Nevertheless,
there is yet no comprehensive theory of this field. A basis for such a theory
is provided here with the introduction of the Potts fluid, a system of
interacting -state spins which are free to move in the continuum. In the limit, the Potts magnetization, susceptibility and correlation functions
are directly related to the percolation probability, the mean cluster size and
the pair-connectedness, respectively. Through the Hamiltonian formulation of
the Potts fluid, the standard methods of statistical mechanics can therefore be
used in the continuum percolation problem.Comment: 26 pages, Late
The MACHO Project 9 Million Star Color-Magnitude Diagram of the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present a 9 million star color-magnitude diagram (9M CMD) of the LMC bar.
The 9M CMD reveals a complex superposition of different age and metallicity
stellar populations, with important stellar evolutionary phases occurring over
3 orders of magnitude in number density. First, we count the non-variable
supergiants, the associated Cepheids, and measure the effective temperatures
defining the instability strip. Lifetime predictions of stellar evolution
theory are tested, with implications for the origin of low-luminosity Cepheids.
The highly-evolved AGB stars have a bimodal distribution in brightness, which
we interpret as discrete old populations (>1 Gyr). The faint AGB may be
metal-poor and very old. We identify the clusters NGC 411 and M3 as templates
for the admixture of old stellar populations. However, there are indications
that the old and metal-poor field population has a red HB morphology: the RR
Lyraes lie on the red edge of the instability strip, the AGB-bump is very red,
and the ratio of AGB-bump stars to RR Lyraes is quite large. If the HB second
parameter is age, the old and metal-poor field population likely formed after
the oldest clusters. Lifetime predictions of stellar evolution theory lead us
to associate a significant fraction of the red HB clump giants with the same
old and metal-poor population producing the RR Lyraes and the AGB-bump. In this
case, compared to the age-dependent luminosity predictions of stellar evolution
theory, the red HB clump is too bright relative to the RR Lyraes and AGB-bump.
Last, the surface density profile of RR Lyraes is fit by an exponential,
favoring a disk-like rather than spheroidal distribution. We conclude that the
age of the LMC disk is probably similar to the age of the Galactic disk.

HST Snaphot Study of Variable Stars in Globular Clusters: Inner Region of NGC 6441
[Abridged] We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope snapshot
program to survey the inner region of the globular cluster NGC 6441 for its
variable stars. A total of 57 variable stars was found including 38 RR Lyrae
stars, 6 Population II Cepheids, and 12 long period variables. Of the RR Lyrae
stars observed in this survey, 26 are pulsating in the fundamental mode with a
mean period of 0.753d and 12 are first-overtone mode pulsators with a mean
period of 0.365d. These values match up very well with those found in
ground-based surveys. Combining all the available data for NGC 6441, we find
mean periods of 0.759d and 0.375d for the RRab and RRc stars, respectively. We
also find that the RR Lyrae in this survey are located in the same regions of a
period-amplitude diagram as those found in ground-based surveys. Although NGC
6441 is a metal-rich globular cluster, its RR Lyrae more closely resemble those
in Oosterhoff type II globular clusters. However, even compared to typical
Oosterhoff type II systems, the mean period of its RRab stars is unusually
long. We also derived I-band period-luminosity relations for the RR Lyrae
stars. Of the six Population II Cepheids, five are of W Virginis type and one
is a BL Herculis variable stars. This makes NGC 6441, along with NGC 6388, the
most metal-rich globular cluster known to contain these types of variable
stars. Another variable, V118, may also be a Population II Cepheid given its
long period and its separation in magnitude from the RR Lyrae stars. We argue
that there does not appear to be a change in the period-luminosity relation
slope between the BL Herculis and W Virginis stars, but that a change of slope
does occur when the RV Tauri stars are added to the period-luminosity relation.Comment: 28 pages, including 9 figures and 8 tables, emulateapj5/apjfonts

Towards an ethical ecology of international service learning
International Service-Learning (ISL) is a pedagogical activity that seeks to blend student learning with community engagement overseas and the development of a more just society. ISL programmes have grown as educational institutions and non-governmental organisations have sought to achieve the goal of developing ‘global citizens’. However, Service Learning (SL) in general and International Service-Learning (ISL) in particular remain deeply under theorised. These educational initiatives provide policy makers with a practical response to their quest for a ‘Big Society’and present alluring pedagogical approaches for Universities as they react to reforms in Higher Education and seek to enhance both the student learning experience and graduate employability. After outlining the development of ISL in policy and practice, this paper draws on the rich tradition of ISL at one British university to argue that ISL is a form of engagement that has the potential to be ethical in character although we identify a number of factors that militate against this. Our contention is that ISL which promotes rationaland instrumental learning represents a deficit model and we therefore conceptualise ISL here as a transformative learning experience that evinces distinctly aesthetic and even spiritual dimensions. Upon this theoretical groundwork we lay the foundations for conceptualizing ISL in ways that ensure its ethical integrity
